Key issues

At present, the entire population of Ranaghat Municipality is fully dependent on Ground water. According to Public Health Engineering Report on water quality, the quality of the source has reached to an alarming level due to the presence of Arsenic beyond its permissible limit. Other than this, severe water logging even so in rainy season is a major problem. Drainage seems to be an inherent and the most serious problem in Ranaghat as well as parts of adjacent Panchayat areas. Management of solid waste to keep out city clean and at the same time to make ourselves able to live a healthy life has become a serious problem and Ranaghat municipal area.

DTG1 carried out site visit with CDS members to all the newly identified slums and examine the issues within the slums.DTG1 also studied reports of existing maps & drawings of slums covered under IHSDP. As a result, DTG-1 finalized assesses the gaps and deficiencies in different priority sectors or service areas.

For facilitating technical analysis DTG-1 divided the 26 newly identified slum pockets into 4 different zones; where Zone-1 consists ward no. - 1, 4 and 10. Zone-2 consists ward no.-11 and 12, Zone-3 consists Ward No.-14, 15 and Zone-4 consists ward no.-13, 16 and 19.

Road
In most of the slum pockets approach roads are kancha and narrow varying 1.2 m. to 2.4 m. Few important roads connected with Panchayet and nearby Cooper Camp are in very poor condition. Few roads are partly damaged. Therefore, Technical study suggests that need to upgrade damaged brick paved roads to the Pucca Road (Cement Concrete and as well as Black Topped Road). The damaged roads are measured and estimated the cost for formulating Project Proposal.

Water Supply
In most of the slum pockets havent any household water connection, Water Pressure is very low, and the water quality is not much good for presence of arsenic and mostly depends on hand tube wells. The technical group suggests that there is a requirement of hand tube well, stand posts, laying and extension of piped water supply in the slums, installation of Arsenic free tube wells (ward wise).

Drainage
In most of the slum pockets there is no drainage network. These areas are generally low land therefore facing water logging problems. The technical group emphasized the requirement of construction of drains and maintenance of existing drainage system.

Sanitation
There is no sewerage system. In few locations Open defecation creates problem. Therefore the technical group suggests that there is requirements of construction of two pit pour flush latrine, construction of community toilet for improvement of sanitary condition.

Solid Waste Management
At present in most of the wards door-to-door collection of waste have been introduced. This is to be extended in to the slum areas. Technical group suggests encouraging the awareness generation of inhabitants of slum pockets for clean and healthy environment by the members of CDS and suggests introducing segregation of degradable and non-bio-degradable waste at household level for further waste treatment.

Street Lighting
In the prioritized slums there are few Street Light posts required in few locations .Very much load shading creates social problems; like increasing anti-social activities etc. Initiatives need to be taken with WBSEDCL to remove the problems.

Parks / Play Grounds
There is a shortage of Parks and childrens Parks. Existing parks need to take care and there are not many properly maintained children amenities. Playgrounds need to be well maintained.

Shelter Up gradation
There is at least 10 % of the slum dwellers need shelter up gradation. But at present there is no such scope as because of unavailability of fund.
